TheBroadviewHotelcalledinNovember.Theywantedsomethingforthelobby—largeenoughtoholdthedouble-heightspace,quietenoughnottofightthearchitecture.Wevisitedthreetimesbeforesketchinganything.Morning,afternoon,evening.Thelightchangescompletely,andtheentrysightlineisnarrow,whichmeanttheinstallationneededtorewardboththedistantglanceandthecloseapproach.

Januarylimitsyouinusefulways.Nopeonies,nogardenroses,noabundancetohidebehind.Webuiltwithwhiteamaryllis,forcedquincebranches,driedpampasgrass,andlongtrailsofamaranthusthatcaughtthelightlikecurtains.Overtwoweekstheamaryllisopenedfullyandthequincebudssplitintopalepinkflowers—bythetimewedeinstalled,thepiecelookednothinglikedayone,andbothversionswereright.
